Since the 19th century, scientists have invented increasingly complex machines to enhance or even replace human activities. For decades, science fiction books and movies have been teasing us with robots of all kinds. The human-like machines were depicted in both positive and menacing ways: from law-bound and helpful robots to the menacing monster bots that can destroy a city within a second.

As kids, we grew up with the idea that the years 2000 would be filled with walking, talking & fast thinking mechanical androids, cyborgs and bots. Reality is we still don’t have a spunky R2-D2 as friend or a worrywart as C-3PO as robot butler doing our dishes and picking up our dirty socks. But the heavy-duty metal men, expressive machines and gold colored protocol droids keep inspiring today’s creative generation.

Robots as Astro Boy, Bender (Futurama), Dexter (Perfect Match), Metal Mickey, HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey), Gigantor, Marvin (Hitchhikers' Guide), Daleks (Dr. Who), T100 (Terminator), Number 5 (Short Circuit), Shakey or Asimo still ignite the imagination of talented artists as Jared Nickerson, Norio Fujikawa and William Chua, to namedrop a few.

Here come the robots - 15 amazing artworks by some of world’s most talented graphic designers and illustrators. Enjoy!
